Things to do in Mallorca
Fancy a trip to Europe? Do you want to see everything the continent has to offer but worry that you don’t have enough time? Come to Mallorca! It is Europe in miniature.
On this compact little island you will feel you’re in a James Bond movie set in Italy as you swoop along the dramatic cliffs on the west coast, the turquoise waves of the Mediterranean crashing against the rocks far below. Wandering around the narrow back streets in the Old Town of Palma will transport you to the Portugal of 300 years ago, while only a few metres away are majestic, shady boulevards reminding you of Paris.
Travelling east under flowering almond trees in your little hire car, the gently rolling emerald green landscape with its dry stone walls, centuries old olive trees, sheep and horses will make you feel you’re in an English costume drama set in 1900, but the same night you could be in any cosmopolitan European city as you savour delicious food, wine and beer from Spain, Italy, Mexico, India – or China! But at 1/3 the price of Hong Kong.
At night, Palma is packed with entertainment; theatre, concerts and museums abound, rivalling those of London and Paris, but without the rain and cold.
You can hire a car with or without driver or a boat with or without skipper. Take a cruise around the Mediterranean, go diving or swimming in crystal clear waters off one of the hundreds of hidden bays, hike up a hill to a monastery overlooking the whole island and then go wine tasting – all in the same day.
It takes a little over an hour to drive from one end to the other of this pearl of the Mediterranean, yet within her sandy and rocky perimeters you will find 20 golf courses, miles and miles of cycling and hiking tracks, 24 vineyards eager to show off some of Mallorca’s 40 indigenous grapes, there are more sparkling white beaches secluded or public than anyone can count, there is hang gliding, sailing, horseback riding... And not least, enough culture and history for a whole continent, let alone a little island!
And everywhere you look, everywhere you go, is a beauty so breathtaking you will wear out your camera finger.
